It wouldn't be a complete fall gathering of our Tocqueville Society members without a bear visitation, and this year was no exception. As the sun set over our city and the temperature dropped, the crowd got the chance to reconnect, hear the latest about the impact their support is having right now in our community, and listen to fantastic tales from local author Robert Beatty. A visit from a mama bear and her three cubs was icing on the cake.
Serafina author, Robert Beatty
A few things were clear upon hearing Mr. Beatty share his journey from an 11 year old with a typewriter who held an audience of one, to the man standing before the crowd as a published author of a series of NY Times best selling novels:
- Committing yourself to your passion is everything - Mr. Beatty knew he had to write and that there was an author inside of him, so no matter what his role; student, CEO, husband and father, he made time to write.
- He not only asked for the opinions of others, he incorporated these opinions into his revisions, especially those of his young daughters.
- He jumped at opportunities - be it the chance to invent new technologies or pitch his book in front of the NY publishing world and Disney.
- He loves words, adventures and his family, and this book series is the manifestation of all three.
Given the chance to either warm up inside the house and begin dinner, or to listen to Mr. Beatty read from his latest novel, the crowd chose to stay put and hear the story. He shared such a gripping passage that there was an audiable gasp at its end. We are so grateful to Mr. Beatty and his wife and co-creator, Jennifer, for sharing their evening with our members and for their generosity of spirit.
