In September, the Asheville Buncombe Middle Grades Network held its annual fall convening at the YMI. Here a few highlights from a day filled with celebration, relationship building and sharing of best practices between parents, teachers, administrators, non-profits and cross-sector community leaders:
Our Partnership Honored
The Coalition for Community Schools and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation recognized the Middle Grades Network as one of five community school initiatives from across the country leading the way in creating a strong culture of health.
Local Initiatives Highlighted
A panel of local experts shared experiences from the field about how the Community Resiliency Model, Mindfulness and Compassionate Schools initiatives are supporting the health and well-being of our students and their families
Action Plans Developed
Parents, school staff and community partners developed plans to extend the reach of these trauma-informed initiatives to more families and ways to include community partners in shared professional development to sustain the great works already underway. Check out the photo gallery from the fall convening.
Here are a few ways to support the work:
Who Got You Through? Help recruit volunteer mentors and tutors for school and community partners.
Homework Diners offer families with school-age students a weekly, free and nutritious dinner, homework help and access to community resources.
- Help spread the word
- Table as a community partner
- We need math tutors! Please email contacts and resources to: sarah.roth@unitedwayabc.org
Resource Teams are volunteers from local businesses, faith groups, neighborhood leaders and parents who meet monthly with school staff and key community partners to help ensure all of our students and families are supported on their way to high school graduation and beyond.
- To visit or join a Resource Team or to find out more, please email: kyle.garrett@unitedwayabc.org
We would like to thank each of you who were able to join us for the fall convening. It was a very special time together. We look forward to seeing you all very soon.
